The Kathryn Anne Lanz Memorial Scholarship was established at Kate’s request. As Kate began to face the realities of her illness, she began to discuss her feelings, wishes and fears with her family and friends.
While dealing with her illness, Kate began to look beyond her passing, to thoughts of what her life would mean once her tomorrows were no more. She realized that her family and friends would always remember her. But, because of her fate, she would be denied furthering her legacy, with a family of her own, a fulfilling career that she hoped for as a writer and college professor and the creation of many more friendships and years of memories.
The establishment of the Kathryn Anne Lanz Memorial Scholarship is to ensure that Kate’s wishes can evolve and touch lives she never had the opportunity to touch. Her hope was that her dream will carry on for many more years to come, in the form of helping those young people she wished she could have helped and impact their lives in a positive way. This scholarship is intended to provide a small monetary award to a college bound student. It will be managed by Kate’s parents, Philip and Jean, who will work with Tenafly High School to identify a qualified candidate. The person considered must demonstrate academic desires in literature and/or journalism and must exhibit the qualities of integrity, leadership and responsibility, which were values Kate possessed and sought in others.
As the annual award is presented, this site will be updated to share the names of the recipients with generous family and friends who donated, all with the common desire to help Kate fulfill her dream of a meaningful and on going legacy.
Thank you for helping carry on Kate’s dream. Philip and Jean Lanz
